Hi everyone
In March 2027 I’ll finish my master’s degree in computer science engineering and I’m scared of losing the ability to learn how to code.
Over the past year I’ve been trying coding agents to keep up with technology, understand how much is hype and how much is not, and I have to say they are revolutionary. They let you do in weeks what would have taken a year.
That’s not the problem, I’m not scared of being replaced by those tools for a lot of reasons, but while I had control over stuff when I was moving slowly, I don’t now that I’m moving fast, and I feel like a cheater somehow. That’s not a big problem in this period because, university to effectively pass the exams require me to know what I’ve done (obviously), making me open the editor and try to understand what my code is doing and why.
If I start an SWE role, I’m not really sure I will be given the time to read every line I generate, maybe the required pace will be too fast for me to slow down and actually learn while doing, or maybe we are moving to a new phase of software where you’re no longer required to know what you wrote, but only what the software does and how it’s structured.
Everything is moving extremely fast, but I want to keep thinking with my own brain even if I’m wrong sometimes, it’s a risk worth taking compared to losing ownership of my craft.
